The Stitches that Bind Us

“When we engage in fiber arts, we are creating something, but we’re also participating in historic traditions tens of thousands of years old. You are not only making art for your soul and future generations, you are embodying the work of our ancestors.” — The Woven Road

The History of Castle Creek Fiber Studio

Castle Creek Fiber Studio has a deeply woven meaning behind its walls.

Established in 1998 by Nancy Camposano, Knitting with Nancy evolved into an extraordinary yarn store with a strong community of knitters. It was THE place to go if you wanted not only to shop, but also find community.

Experienced knitters were always available to provide you with individual attention regarding your selections and to answer any knitting questions you may have. The round table was always full of women knitting, looking over exciting new designs by Nancy, and chatting with friends new and old. The ambiance was irreplaceable.

However, in August of 2016, Nancy decided she no longer wanted to run a business. Having put in many years of hard work, she was ready to take a step back, knit with friends, and focus on creating new designs. She put the business up for sale, hoping to find a buyer who would embrace the unique spirit of her store.

Meanwhile, retired business owner Chris Carriero was looking for her next entrepreneurial venture, one that would give her the opportunity to share her love of fiber and weaving. Call it fate or happenstance, but three days after Nancy put her store up for sale, Chris discovered it. She immediately reached out to Nancy to inquire about purchasing the shop.

By February of 2017, Chris acquired Knitting with Nancy and Castle Creek Fiber Studio was born. Understanding the importance of the communal aspect of Nancy’s store, Chris decided to expand on it, renovating the shop and adding additional space to making room for classrooms, meeting spaces, weaving and other fibers arts.

Weathering the Storm

The planned renovations were expected to be completed by the end of 2017, but mother nature had other plans. In September, Irma blew through Southwest Florida, leaving significant damage in her wake. The hurricane tore apart Castle Creek Fiber Studio’s roof, leaving the store in a horrible mess. Chris and her staff came together to breathe life back into these precious walls. Over the course of six weeks, they worked tirelessly to put the store back together and reopen its doors.

Despite the setback, Irma did not dampen the spirits of Chris and her team. With its first year now under its belt, Castle Creek Fiber Studios is seeing its vision become a reality. They have added to their staff, entered the electronic world with a new point of sale system that accommodates a loyalty program, and joined the growing number of ecommerce yarn vendors.

Weaving Threads into the Community

One unique aspect of Castle Creek Studios is its Community Outreach Specialist, Velinda. She has established a large group of women who meet on Tuesday afternoons and knit for community projects such as Little Hats Big Hearts, Knitted Knockers and Twiddle Muffs for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. Velinda is also working with a number of Assisted Living Facility Activities Directors to bring fiber therapy into the facilities and to bring residents into our shop for classes and field trips.

These outreach projects have been enthusiastically welcomed by participants, and our studio looks forward to expanding its outreach to child-friendly projects during school vacation periods.

We here at Castle Creek recognize that we are not only pioneers in the fiber arts but stewards of the industry and are dedicated to the community and preserving this art form for generations to come. We’re constantly thinking of ways we can benefit the community. It is our dream and our goal to take our customers on a journey down the path towards fiber nirvana!
